How you get a seat
Seats are issued in the order people joined the drop list. When enrollment opens we email that list first — no public announcement goes out before it. Once a tier's 100 are held, founding closes on that tier and it reopens as a Member seat, $5–10 a month more, without the engraved number.

What happens when a tier fills
Each founding tier caps at 100 and is never expanded. Once seat #100 is held, that level reopens as a Member cohort at $5–10 a month above founding: same blades, same tracks, printed member number instead of an engraved one, current rate instead of a locked one. Retired founding seats go to that tier's waitlist first, in order — the number itself stays retired.
The Collector track is the roster we expect to close first — it runs on 1-of-1 and Japan-sourced steel we can't reorder.
The founding rosters are a hard 300: 100 Essential, 100 Premium and 100 Collector. Those numbers don't move. What happens next is not a mystery and not a second founding class — once a roster fills, it reopens as a Member cohort at the published rate above, with the engraved founding number retired for good. If you want the engraving and the locked price, the founding window is the only place to get either.
The two cohorts, side by side
Member rates are the published rates for the second cohort at launch. Founding rates never change for founding seats. Annual prepay keeps the pay-for-10, get-12 structure in both cohorts.
What Member seats do and don't carry
Founding seats 1–100 get their member number engraved on the brass token and stamped on every maker's card. Member seats get the same crate, the same documentation and a printed member number — no engraving, ever. That mark is issued once and never reissued.
Founding members keep their rate for as long as they stay enrolled, through every future increase. Member seats bill at whatever the published rate is when they join — $5–10/month above founding today, and it moves with the cost of steel.
Nothing about the steel changes: identical allocation, identical vetting, identical care kits, identical first-box Copper Damascus fillet. Founding seats simply sit ahead of Member seats in the claim order on member-only patterns and 1-of-1s.
Retired founding seats are offered to that roster's waitlist first, in the order names arrive, at the founding rate minus the engraving. Everyone else joins as a Member seat as capacity allows — we open Member seats in batches the bench can actually supply, not all at once.
Where we stand
Most subscription boxes are breadth plays — a knife one month, a torch the next. We only do blades, which is why the standard holds from cycle to cycle and why we can tell you the steel, the smith and the real price of everything in the crate.
We don't sell flashlights, patches, paracord or freeze-dried snacks. Knives, swords and the steel that goes with them — that's the whole catalogue. Depth in one category beats a shallow pass at ten.

Every blade is inspected in hand before it's assigned: edge geometry, grind symmetry, handle fit, hardness spot-check, then sharpened on stones. A piece that doesn't pass doesn't go in a box — we swap it, we don't ship it.

The test bench
Unboxing tells you what a knife looks like. Testing tells you whether it holds an edge. Every piece we sell goes through the same four checks, and we publish the results — including the ones that aren't flattering.
Every blade leaves on a recorded edge test — three push-cuts through 20lb paper and a clean slice through hanging newsprint. The result goes on your card, not in a caption.
Sample blades from each batch cut 1/2" manila rope to a set count before we re-test the edge. If a steel or heat treat under-performs, that maker doesn't get a slot.
Bevel symmetry, spine taper, tang fit and handle seat checked by eye and by caliper. Cosmetic pattern is the last thing we look at, not the first.
Chef blades go on a real line for a service; EDC goes in a pocket for a week. We write up what wore, what stained and what we'd change — including on knives we're selling.
